Wondering where to stay in Izmir but feeling a little lost?
I totally get it! Izmir has so many districts and neighbourhoods to choose from plus countless accommodation options that it can get a tad mind boggling. If you’ve got to the point where you cannot distinguish your Konaks from your Karşıyakas, don’t worry because we’re here to help.
Izmir (formerly known as Smyrna) is Turkey’s third largest city and an alluring combination of ancient ruins, unique cultural heritage and buzzing cosmopolitan metropolis. Renowned for being an important trading hub and one of the oldest settlements in the Mediterranean world, the city’s history stretches back an incredible 8500 years.
Today, visitors from all over the globe flock to Izmir to sample some of Turkey’s most lip-smackingly delicious food, soak up the sun along its spectacular coastline (Izmir beaches are honestly glorious), party from dusk till dawn or explore the area’s natural beauty filled with stunning mountains and forests.
Izmir’s neighbourhoods offer something for every kind of traveller: from areas bursting at the seams with Ottoman-era historical charm, winding cobbled streets and buzzing bazaars to elegant boulevards lined with cafes and restaurants that wouldn’t look out of place in a spread from Vogue.
There are actually 30 districts in Izmir province - this in-depth guide covers 4 central Izmir districts and 7 different neighbourhoods that are part of the city of Izmir. The areas that we have selected are either close to the main Izmir tourist attractions, in areas of natural beauty or near the airport, for those of you who are on a flying visit!
As usual, our list of the best areas to stay in Izmir also includes some off-beat places, for travellers who want to stay outside the regular tourist hubs.
This is a very comprehensive guide (a cup of tea or coffee may be required) so feel free to use the contents below to jump to the section you want to read.
We’ve also included a map at the start of the article so that you can see where the different districts and neighbourhoods are in relation to the main tourist attractions.
Why should you listen to us?
We’ve visited Izmir numerous times (including one trip lasting a month) and stayed in a lot of different hotels and apartments all over the city. In fact, our most recent trip was in July 2024 where we spent a lot of time eating and trying our best to stay out of the searing sun (it was ridiculously hot!).
During our trips we have stayed in accommodation that is close to the major tourist attractions in Izmir and also spent time further away when we have wanted to get away from it all. We’ve splashed out on fancy hotels and pinched our pennies by renting cute but more affordable apartments.
So what does this mean for you? Well, we’ve now got a really good idea of the best places to stay in Izmir Turkey whether you’re visiting this sunny city for the first time, are a budget adventurer or looking for a luxury sojourn.
Where to Stay in Izmir - How Should You Choose?
As we’ve mentioned, Izmir is a city that has accommodation and neighbourhoods to suit every kind of traveller. So when it comes to choosing where to stay you need to think about what your interests are, the kind of holiday you want, your budget and how much time you have to spend.
So now it’s time for a bit of introspection!
Do you want to be smack bang in the centre, easy walking distance to all the attractions in Izmir and just steps away from your bed at night? Or is navigating public transport something that adds to the way you experience a city and you don't mind staying somewhere that is just a ferry or tram ride away?
Are you a lover of history and want to spend your time exploring Izmir's historical sites like the Agora of Smyrna, the Izmir Clock Tower and the meandering streets of the sprawling Kemeraltı Bazaar?
Do you prefer to explore a city with your tastebuds, seeking out the top restaurants, cafes and street food vendors in the city? Or are you a shopaholic and want to spend most of your time racking up your credit card bill in one of Izmir’s many fancy malls?
Perhaps you've heard about nightlife in Izmir and want to drink and dance till sunrise at one of the city's many cool nightlife spots?
How many days do you have to spend in Izmir? Is this just a brief stopover or are you in no hurry to get home?
And last but definitely not least: cash monies. Are you a budget, mid-range or luxury traveller? (In this guide I will recommend accommodation in Izmir that caters to every budget).
By taking the time to answer these questions you will have a much better idea of what kind of trip you want to have, thereby making it easier for you to decide where to stay in Izmir.

BASMANE: The Best Place to Stay in Izmir For Budget Travellers
The unique and multicultural neighbourhood of Basmane is a good choice for travellers searching for cheap hotels in Izmir Turkey or those looking for a more local and authentic experience.
Today this quaint area is teeming with majestic historical mansions, many falling into disrepair. Traditional tea houses filled with men playing backgammon rub shoulders with tiny grocery stores, lokantas, dessert shops and bakeries offering fresh-from-the-oven simits and pastries.
One of Izmir's oldest neighbourhoods, Basmane is dominated by the grand Izmir train station and is the perfect area for anyone who wants an off-beat tour of Izmir. Still close to Izmir's top attractions, Basmane is a much more affordable area to stay in and there are hotels to suit all budgets here.
Travellers who are really scrimping their pennies can even stay at one of the doss houses along Basmane's infamous Oteller Sokağı (not what we would recommend though!)
WHY YOU SHOULD STAY IN BASMANE
🏛 Historic area: Once the heart of Roman era Smyrna, Basmane was also the multicultural centre of Izmir where Turks, Armenians, Jews and Greeks lived together until the devastating fire of 1922.
📍 Great Location: the attractions in Konak are just 15-20 minutes on foot.
📸 Authentic and photogenic: Basmane is still the most multicultural neighbourhood in Izmir, now home to Iraqis, Kurds, Syrians, Turks and Roma. Boisterous children play in the streets while their neighbours gossip on the stoop of a ramshackle house. The colourful and dilapidated mansions are a photographer's dream.
⛲ Local attractions: Elaborately carved with flowers, curtains, fruit, mosques and Arabic calligraphy, the Dönertaş Sebil water fountain is a magnificent example of Ottoman Era architecture. Meanwhile the Basmane Train Station - built in 1866, is the second oldest train station in Turkey.
The ostentatious Police Memorial House from 1913 is a great example of orientalist architecture and now serves as a museum about the police department. Other notable attractions include the recently restored Agios Vouklos Church, the only Greek Orthodox Church that survived the catastrophic 1922 fire.
🚇 Great local public transport: The metro from Basmane to Konak station runs frequently and takes just 8 minutes - the Clock Tower and Konak Square are just a few minutes’ walk from Konak station. The metro followed by the IZBAN line train will get you to Alsancak in just 17 minutes.
🚆 Excellent location for travelling to other destinations in Turkey: Basmane Gar has a wide range of intercity and regional train routes. Regional trains take you to Selçuk (for Ephesus and Şirince) and Denizli (for Pamukkale) plus other destinations such as Manisa and Aydın.
Intercity lines with high speed and sleeper trains connect Izmir to cities such as Konya, Eskişehir and Isparta.
💰 Ideal for a budget Izmir trip: Some of the cheapest hotels in Izmir Turkey are here - you’ll find many friendly B&Bs and basic but clean hostels. There are also tons of cheap lokanta-style restaurants, tasty burger and döner kebab shops and pide places so eating out doesn’t cost a bomb either.
If you have more cash to splash, there is plenty of apartment style accommodation, unique boutique hotels, and 4* hotels.
💎 Discover hidden gems: Fersudan Sahaf is an antique and second hand bookstore located in a dilapidated historical mansion. Filled from floor-to-ceiling with hundreds of books, it’s a bibliophile’s paradise. There are many books in foreign languages and prices (even for very old tomes) are reasonable.
Pros
👍 Plenty of budget and mid-range hotels
👍 Amazing public transport links
👍 Excellent for travellers taking the train to other areas of Turkey
👍 Lower prices in shops, restaurants and cafes
👍 Central location
👍 Walking distance to main attractions
👍 Diverse and interesting neighbourhood

The location is fantastic - walking distance to the bazaar district, metro, bus and tram stops and there are budget-friendly restaurants and cafes all around.
Karşıyaka District
We stayed in the Karşıyaka district on our first trip to Izmir and we absolutely loved it!
Located over the water from Konak, we think that this district is one of the best places in Izmir Turkey for couples.
Karşıyaka boasts a gorgeous palm-tree lined coastal promenade and park that is reminiscent of Istanbul’s Kadıköy district.
In the summer, people gather in the parks for a late evening picnic or take a leisurely stroll or bike ride along the coast to watch the sun go down. It’s a welcome escape from the crowds in Izmir’s more central neighbourhoods.
Famous for its Levantine mansions and houses and unique historical attractions, Karşıyaka also has a vibrant bazaar district and is also home to Izmir’s largest outdoor weekly market.
With a buzzing nightlife scene, fantastic cafes and restaurants serving up Izmir delicacies and numerous vegan and vegetarian restaurants, this district really does have something for everyone.
If you’ve been looking for apartment style accommodation in Izmir Turkey then look no further than Karşıyaka. There aren’t any high end hotels in this area - instead you’ll find homely apartments and friendly guesthouses.
Crucially this chilled out district really isn’t that far away. Frequent ferries (every 15 minutes) run across the Gulf of Izmir getting you to Alsancak in 18 minutes or Konak within 15 minutes.
Our favourite neighbourhoods for travellers are Karşıyaka centre and the cool neighbourhood of Bostanli.
KARŞIYAKA CENTRE - Where to Stay in Izmir for Affordable Apartment Style Accommodation
Known for its long coastal walkway, lively bazaar and beautiful Levantine mansions, Karşıyaka is often described as the ‘most liveable’ place in Izmir and is a top choice for locals who want to settle down with their families.
Packed with great restaurants, cafes and shops, a lively nightlife scene and affordable accommodation this area is ideal for couples or visitors looking for apartment style accommodation in an upscale, modern neighbourhood.
WHY YOU SHOULD STAY IN KARŞIYAKA CENTRE
🛍 Shopping: Just steps away from the Karşıyaka ferry pier is the vibrant Karşıyaka bazaar. Here grocery stores selling fresh fruit and vegetables, fishmongers and restaurants share the pavement with second hand bookstores, cute cafes, opticians, department stores and fancy perfume and jewellery shops. Whether you want to splash the cash or just people-watch over a glass of çay, it’s worth a visit.
🍸 Amazing nightlife: The waterfront cafes and bars (many with happy hour offers) are filled with patrons into the wee hours. There is something to suit everyone’s taste here: from casual sports bars to classy cocktail lounges and stylish gastro pubs with live music.
🍽 Great place to try local food: Feeling adventurous? Wander around the bazaar area and you’ll discover customers sitting at tables spilling out onto the street from numerous cafes doing a roaring trade in Izmir delicacies such as kokoreç (roasted and spiced lamb intestines) and söğüş (cold cuts made from lamb brain, cheek and eye fat).
⛲ Local attractions: Don’t miss Latife Hanim Memorial House. Belonging to the wife of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (Turkiye’s founding father), it’s also where Atatürk’s mother, Zubeyde Hanim, spent her final days before her death.
Then explore the gorgeous St Helen Catholic Church - built in 1904 and designed by the French architect Raymond Charles Pere, who also designed the Izmir Clock Tower, it is the first Catholic church in Karşıyaka.
Architecture lovers should check out the Panetti and Van der Zee mansions - both excellent examples of Levantine design.
🚍 Well connected by public transport: Ferries from Karşıyaka’s ferry pier run every 15 minutes to Alsancak (18 minutes), Konak (15 minutes), Pasaport (12 minutes). There are also numerous bus routes that connect Karşıyaka to Izmir city centre.
The suburban IZBAN train line runs through the area as well (the main stations for the centre of Karşıyaka are Alaybey and Karşıyaka). This is particularly useful if you stay out late partying in Alsancak - the last IZBAN train is 01:21, so you will still be able to get home!
🏠 Affordable accommodation: Most of the accommodation in Karşıyaka are reasonably priced apartments or B&B style hotels. Great for travellers on a budget! If you’re looking for a cheap hotel in Izmir Turkey, this may be the area for you.

The Bostanlı Izmir area of Karşıyaka is often referred to as the coolest neighbourhood in Izmir and it’s easy to understand why.
With cool cafes, stylish restaurants, a growing vegan scene and some lovely parks by the sea, this walkable and chic area is where you’ll find Izmir’s wealthy residents.
Bostanlı’s meyhanes (taverns) offering live music and countless pubs and bars open until the early hours make this neighbourhood a great choice for young travellers or those looking for an area with a vibrant nightlife scene.
Most of the accommodation in this area are small hotels and apartments. There are many rooms in shared flats available as well. In our opinion, Karşıyaka centre has better accommodation options so you could always stay there and explore Bostanlı very easily.
WHY YOU SHOULD STAY IN (OR NEAR!) BOSTANLI
🛍 Shopping: Bostanlı Pazar is Izmir’s largest outdoor weekly market and sells everything from olives and regional cheeses to clothes, household goods and antiques. Hungry? Head over to the stalls just outside of the market making fresh gözleme (Turkish stuffed pancakes) with various fillings.
🥑 Great for vegans and vegetarians: Bostanlı has a surprising number of vegan and vegetarian friendly restaurants. Our favourites include Karşıyaka Meze Evi, which serves homestyle Turkish food and Gibi Vegan, which offers vegan club sandwiches, mac and cheese and wraps. Soledo Pizza also has a full selection of vegan pizzas!
We also love Et Yok Third Wave Kebab which serves an amazing vegan döner kebab plus vegan ayran and homemade lemonade. All of these restaurants make Bostanlı one of the best places to live in Izmir for vegans and vegetarians.

There is a 24-hour front desk and free private parking. Guests can enjoy a buffet breakfast and the IZBAN train station is less than 10 minutes walk from the hotel.
Gaziemir District
Located 13 km outside of Izmir city centre, Gaziemir is the district where local Izmirites rush to on weekends when they want to get away from it all.
And we can see why! Gaziemir is Izmir’s greenest district: filled with lush pine forests, picnic areas and small lakes, it’s world’s away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Gaziemir is also where Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport is located and so is perfect for travellers who are on a flying visit (accidental pun there) to the city. The IZBAN train line seamlessly connects the centre of Gaziemir to Izmir airport making getting between the two a cinch. However if you want to be even closer, there are great value hotels inside the airport itself!
Gaziemir mostly has boutique, mid-range and luxury hotels - whilst there are fewer budget options, the hotels in this district are good value for money.
This is a large district and we sadly didn’t have the time to properly explore all the neighbourhoods in this area in-depth on our previous trips to Izmir. Therefore all of our recommendations below for where to stay in Gaziemir will be from all over the district.
GAZIEMIR: The Best Area to Stay in Izmir for Families and the Airport
Gaziemir is a great choice for travellers who want to be close to the airport, families looking for activities to do with their kids and nature lovers who want to explore Izmir’s wilder side (and no, I don’t mean the party scene).
Filled with amazing picnic sites, forests, lakes and parks, this area is perfect for hiking and walking or just relaxing with your family. It’s also home to Space Camp - an educational camp about maths and science that is run by NASA - and the largest shopping mall in Turkey’s Aegean region.
And with the IZBAN train line visitors can still explore Izmir’s most popular neighbourhoods with ease.
WHY YOU SHOULD STAY IN GAZIEMIR
🛍 Good for shopping: Optimum Izmir is the largest shopping mall in the Aegean region of Turkey. With 250 stores, two humongous playgrounds for kids, tons of parking space and numerous dining options, it’s a paradise for shopaholics.
👪 Fantastic for families: Space Camp Türkiye offers 9-15 year olds international summer camp experiences where they can take part in tons of exciting activities such as riding in space flight and zero gravity simulators, building their own Mars rover, robots and rockets and going on virtual reality adventures. There are also daily tours and programmes that the whole family can get involved in.
🌲 Green spaces: Sarnıç Picnic Area covers 350 hectares of pıne forest and is perfect for travellers who want to escape the city. With a range of walking and cycling trails and a mix of free and paid picnic areas that are perfect for alfresco dining, getting out in nature has never been this easy. There is also a restaurant, clean drinking water and free parking,
✈️ Close to the airport: If you’ve booked cheap flights to Izmir and access to Adnan Menderes Airport airport is one of your top priorities, then this is the area for you. The airport is connected to the IZBAN train line, so getting to your hotel is super easy with public transport. Alternatively you can stay in a hotel right in the airport itself!
🚇 Good public transport: The IZBAN train line will get you into Alsancak and Konak in around 15 minutes to 30 minutes depending on where you stay in Gaziemir (this doesn’t include getting to the station). This means that exploring Izmir’s more central neighbourhoods is still possible even if you don’t have a car.
🚘 Great for a driving holiday: Gaziemir is ideal for those who want to explore Izmir and other areas of Turkey by renting a car. It’s superbly well connected with easy access to motorways heading towards popular destinations like Selçuk (for Ephesus) and Turkey’s coastal regions. Plus you can easily pick up your rental car from Izmir airport! Check car rental Izmir prices here.

I am looking at cheap holidays to Izmir. What is the best area to stay in Izmir for budget travellers?
Izmir has a wide range of hostels, apartments and B&Bs that are comfortable and affordable for budget travellers. Areas like Basmane , Alsancak and Konak have budget-friendly accommodation options that are still close to the sights. Karşıyaka is also a great choice for affordable apartments and private rooms in apartments.
Some of the hostels and hotels we recommend are Lotus Garden Hostel in Konak, Shantihome Hostel in Alsancak and the wonderful St945 Palas Otel in Basmane. We also love this apartment in Karşıyaka.
What is the best time to look at booking Izmir accommodation?
Whilst Izmir might not be a super popular holiday destination amongst international tourists it certainly is amongst locals, particularly when temperatures start to rise!
We booked our most recent trip to Izmir at the last minute during the height of summer and we were quite surprised at the high prices for hotel rooms and even apartments.
We’d therefore recommend booking your accommodation a couple of months in advance, especially if you are planning to travel during the peak holiday season (July and August). Accommodation is cheaper during the shoulder seasons (April, May, early June and September and October) and of course, in winter.
What is the best hotel in Izmir Turkey near the sea?
Our favourite hotels near the sea include:
The Izmir Marriott Hotel in Konak, the Swissotel Buyuk Efes Izmir in Alsancak and the Hyatt Regency Izmir IstinyePark in Balcova. All of these hotels have incredible sea views.
What is the best area to stay in Izmir with family?
Konak, Alsancak and Karşıyaka are all reasonably close to the main attractions and have great accommodation options for families. Being close to the main attractions is also useful for families with young children, the elderly or anyone with mobility issues.
Further out, the districts of Balcova and Gaziemir have amazing resort-like hotels that are excellent for families plus numerous activities that are suitable for children.
What are the best places to stay in Izmir for shopping?
Kemeraltı bazaar is a great first choice for shopaholics - you’ll find souvenirs, handicrafts and textiles plus popular local brands and well-known international high street stores. Alsancak’s Kıbrıs Şehitler Caddesi also has numerous high street stores, jewellery shops and bookshops.
Across the water, the Karşıyaka bazaar and the weekly Bostanlı market are worth checking out for a more local shopping experience.
If you’re looking for classic shopping malls then head further afield to Balcova and Gaziemir - the latter is home to the largest shopping mall in Turkey’s Aegean region!
🔥 Hot tip:
Stay connected on your Istanbul trip and cut excessive roaming charges with Airalo e-SIMs. They have excellent data packages at very affordable prices.
Is Izmir Safe?
We’d definitely say so. It’s a city that is geared towards hosting tourists from all over the world and this actually makes us feel much safer.
We’ve never had any issues when we’ve visited and always felt welcome. We’ve also stayed out late at night and come home in the early hours and that didn’t cause us any problems either.
We’d recommend taking the same precautions as you would in any large city like London or Istanbul such as leaving your valuables at your hotel (and not being too flashy), being alert for pickpockets in crowded areas like the bazaar and being more vigilant late at night.
The backstreets of the Basmane area can be a bit sketchy at night, so we wouldn’t recommend wandering around there in the dark.
What is the best area to stay in Izmir for vegetarians and vegans?
Bostanlı and nearby Karşıyaka is the most vegan and vegetarian friendly area in Izmir with lots of plant based restaurants and cafes.
Meanwhile Shantihome Hostel in Konak is a vegan and vegetarian friendly hostel that allows guests to use its kitchen to make meat-free meals.
Is there affordable car hire in Turkey Izmir?
Absolutely! We’d recommend checking out Discover Cars, where car rental prices in Izmir start from as little as £9/$12 per day. You can also easily arrange to pick your car up from Izmir Airport when you arrive. Check out car rental prices in Izmir here.
⌛ Conclusion
Is Izmir Worth Visiting?
Most definitely! Whilst it doesn’t have lots of major tourist attractions like Istanbul, the province of Izmir really does have a lot to offer visitors.
As a coastal city with year-round pleasant temperatures, Izmir has a very laid back and cosmopolitan vibe. There are bars and clubs if you want to party or enjoy a sundown cocktail and plenty of cafes and teahouses too, if caffeine is your preferred poison.
Foodies will love Izmir’s gastronomic scene where you can try unique local dishes such as boyoz and kumru and for the more adventurous amongst you, sögüş (a mix of cold cuts made from the brain, tongue, eye fat and cheek of a lamb).
The province of Izmir also has some of the most gorgeous beaches we’ve ever seen in areas such as Ceşme and picture postcard towns like Alacatı.
And while the city centre of Izmir has only a few historical sites, the province is actually home to one of the major ones: the stunning, sprawling ruins of Ephesus.
After living in Istanbul for four years, Izmir seemed quieter to us - much less crowded and with far fewer international tourists even though it was the height of summer. So if you’re after that kind of vibe, a holiday to Izmir is for you!
We hope that you find this guide useful and that you find the perfect place to stay in Izmir. Let us know in the comments!
