Wondering where to stay in Istanbul?

I understand your struggle - there are SO many different areas in Istanbul to choose from that it can be a little overwhelming for visitors, especially if you are visiting this mega-city for the first time.

As Turkey’s largest city (15.5 million inhabitants and counting), Istanbul is famous for its rich history, beautiful architecture, epic skyline, diverse cultures, friendly folk and superb gastronomy, all washed down with endless cups of tea.

To really make the most of your visit to Istanbul, it’s important that you stay in an area that caters to your interests, budget and tastes. And we are here to help!

This guide covers 6 districts and over 15 different neighbourhoods and will give you a really good idea of where to stay in Istanbul, including what to expect from each area.

We’ve also included some off-beat places, for those of you who want to stay away from the typical tourist areas!

This is a ‘mega post’ so use the contents below to jump to the section you want to read. There's also a useful map at the start of the article so you can see where the different areas are in relation to the main tourist attractions.

Why should you listen to us?

We’ve visited Istanbul four times and four years ago we moved here to make this city our home (well, our temporary home at least!). Since then, we’ve rented apartments all over Istanbul and spent weeks exploring different parts of this amazing city.

What does this mean for you? Well, we’ve now got a really good idea of the best areas to stay in Istanbul whether you are a first time visitor or somebody who's really familiar with the city.

I’ve never been to Istanbul before. Shouldn’t I just stay in Sultanahmet?

Most people often just assume that the best place to stay in Istanbul is near the major Istanbul tourist attractions in Sultanahmet. Whilst this is a good idea for some travellers (especially those short on time), this wouldn’t be our recommendation for everyone.

The Best Areas to Stay in Istanbul - How Should You Choose?

When you are thinking about where to stay in Istanbul it all comes down to the kind of holiday you want, what you’re most interested in, how much time you have and your budget. So it’s time to ask yourself some honest questions.

Are you a history buff who wants to check off all the major historical sites like the Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Topkapı Palace and Galata Tower? Is food more your thang and do you want to spend time exploring the best restaurants and cafes in the city?

Is this trip about revamping your wardrobe and taking advantage of Istanbul’s amazing shopping scene

Do you want to drink and dance till you drop and just see Istanbul in the (very) early hours of the morning?

How many days do you have to spend in the city? Have you got all the time in the world or is this just a weekend break?

And finally - let's talk ca$h monies: are you a budget, mid-range or luxury traveller? (I’ll be recommending various Istanbul accommodations in this guide to cater to every budget).

Answering these questions will hopefully help you to narrow down what you want to get out of your trip and make it easier for you to decide where to stay in Istanbul Turkey.

Best Area to Stay in Istanbul - Our Top 3 Picks

If you are in a rush, check out our top recommendations for the best area to stay in Istanbul and the top hotels:

Galata in Beyoglu District: Galata with its cool cafes, charming cobbled streets, neoclassical buildings and superb location is one of the best areas in Istanbul for people visiting the city for the first time.

Just a stone's throw away from Istiklal Street and within easy access of the metro or tram, you can get to anywhere in Istanbul from here.

NOA Luxury Apartments (⭐9.5)

These bright spacious apartments are walking distance to Galata Tower and feature a spacious kitchen, washing machine/tumble dryer and free Wi-Fi.

Fener & Balat in Fatih District: The colourful houses of Fener and Balat have made this area one of the must-see places in Istanbul. However, this area is a great place to stay too!

Quirky cafes and restaurants abound and here you get a chance to experience local life away from the crowds. Plenty of buses and ferries (including to Üsküdar on the Asian side) connect this area to the rest of Istanbul.

We'd highly recommend going on a half-day guided walking tour of the area to really explore the rich history of Fener and Balat. You'll discover iconic sites such as the Bulgarian Iron Church, the former residence of a Romanian prince and the Ahrida Synagogue along the way.

Fener Sweet (⭐9.8)

This friendly homestay is amazingly affordable and well connected to public transport. It has clean, cosy rooms, a shared fully equipped kitchen and lounge and the lovely roof terrace has incredible views of the Golden Horn.

Osmanbey/Kurtuluş in Şişli District: In our opinion, this is one of the best neighbourhoods in Istanbul. It’s where we actually live. Haven’t heard of it? Don’t let that put you off.

Close to the metro and buses, it’s superbly connected (Taksim Square is just one stop on the metro and the historic centre of Sultanahmet is just 30 mins by metro and tram).

There are also plenty of fantastic places to eat, lots of cute cafes, bars and taverns and the trendy neighbourhoods of Nişantaşı and Beşiktaş are very close by.

Renata Boutique Hotel Şişli (⭐9.4)

This hotel’s comfortable and spacious suites are perfect for families with kids. There’s a generous breakfast buffet and the metro station is only 3-minutes walk away.

Istanbul European Side - Districts & Neighbourhoods

Beyoğlu District

The Galata Tower in Istanbul surrounded by colourful houses

Lying north of the Golden Horn, the lively sprawling district of Beyoğlu is one of the most popular areas of Istanbul to stay in, especially for first-time visitors.

Teeming with hip bars, trendy restaurants, buzzing cafes and nightclubs where you get to shake your thang into the early hours, Beyoğlu is the district that never sleeps and the place to stay if you want to have a good time.

And yes, whilst it is considered to be one of the best places to visit in Istanbul at night, Beyoğlu is not just a place for party animals! Many of the must visit places in Istanbul are here, including the famous Galata Tower, the bustling pedestrian street of Istiklal Caddesi (Independence Avenue) and Taksim Square

Beyoğlu attracts all kinds of travellers mainly because there are accommodation options that cater for every budget: you’ll find cheap and cheerful hostels for backpackers, fashionable apartments and plenty of expensive luxury hotels.

Many Istanbul neighborhoods make up the huge Beyoğlu district and the ones I’ll be exploring in more detail are: Cihangir, Galata, Taksim and Karaköy.

CİHANGİR: The Best Place to Stay in Istanbul for Cool Cafes & Charming Vibes

If you like hipster vibes, cool cafes and street art, then Cihangir is the best place in Istanbul to stay. This residential and less touristy area of Istanbul is extremely popular with singers, actors, artists and foreigners too - we stayed in Cihangir for several months and really loved it!

A Cihangir cafe with lots of flowers and hanging baskets in Istanbul

WHY YOU SHOULD STAY IN CİHANGİR

📍Excellent location: Cihangir doesn’t have many particular attractions of its own but is superbly located. It’s walking distance to Taksim Square (which is on the M2 metro line) and Istiklal Street.

10-minutes walk takes you to a T1 tram stop, from which you can take a tram to the major historical sites of Sultanahmet (a 12-13 minute ride) or ferries from Karaköy to the Asian side of the city. From here you can easily experience the best of Istanbul!

Lots of cafes, bars and restaurants: The neighbourhood of Cihangir itself is utterly charming - narrow streets lined with gourmet food shops, wine bars, antique stores and unique cafes serving great coffee, everywhere you look. If you’re hungry, there are plenty of fantastic restaurants where you can indulge in a Turkish breakfast, pide, kebab, fancy burger or whatever your heart desires.

🥑 Great for vegans and vegetarians: This bohemian area also has a great vegan and vegetarian cafe scene and even a vegan grocery, so if you are a “vegetable person” like me, this is definitely the place for you!

💻 Good for digital nomads/remote workers: Cihangir is a great place to stay in Istanbul if you are looking to get some work done - many of the cafes have fast Wi-Fi and it’s a popular area for remote workers and digital nomads (I jokingly call it the land of Macbooks). Jokes aside, this is one of the reasons many foreigners choose Cihangir for a long-term stay in the city.

Pros

👍 Superb location and public transport links

👍Great cafes and restaurants

👍 Good for vegans/vegetarians

👍 Authentic and local neighbourhood

👍 Affordable accommodation

👍Good for a long term stay

Cons

👎 Very hilly so not suitable for anyone with mobility issues

👎 Residential area so no high quality hotels - accommodation is mostly apartments or suites

👎 No major tourist attractions in the immediate area.

GALATA: The Best Area of Istanbul to Stay for Nightlife

The winding streets of the historic neighbourhood of Galata are chock full of cafes, independent clothing stores and souvenir shops. Known for its happening nightlife scene, it’s no wonder that in recent years, Galata has developed a reputation for being one of the coolest neighborhoods in Istanbul.

Galata Tower in Istanbul at sunset - where to stay in Istanbul

WHY YOU SHOULD STAY IN GALATA

🍸 Best nightlife: Those of you looking for Istanbul areas with a fantastic nightlife scene, should look no further than Galata. From rooftop bars with the best view of Istanbul, cosy meyhanes where you can have an evening of raki and mezzes, uber-cool clubs, late night backgammon cafes and bars serving extravagant cocktails, Galata really does have something for everyone.

🏛 Architecture and history: Architecture buffs will love Galata with its mix of modern and neoclassical buildings crowding onto the narrow cobbled streets and the art nouveau Camondo stairs that lead up to the imposing 700-year-old Galata Tower, the area’s main tourist attraction. The observatory deck at the top of the tower gives you a panoramic view of Istanbul!

🎨 Art galleries: Galata is also one of the best places in Istanbul to visit for art lovers as there are art galleries aplenty in this area! Make sure to visit SALT Galata, a former Ottoman bank with an incredible glass ceiling that now functions as a gallery, coffee shop and museum.

For a more off-beat art experience, visit the Schneidertempel Art Center, a 19th century Ashkenazi synagogue that has been converted into an art centre.

🚇 Public transport: For many tourists, Galata is one of the best neighborhoods in Istanbul because of its location. The Şişhane metro station (on the M2 line) is within walking distance; you can take the Tünel funicular down from Galata to Karaköy (2 minutes) with its ferries and the T1 tram to Sultanahmet for the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sofia (10 minutes).

The entertainment district of Istiklal Caddesi is also just a few minutes walk away.

🥇 Great for first time visitors: The metro and funicular near Galata means that getting to the historical areas of Istanbul is easy and you can still enjoy the buzzing modern areas of the city too!

🏠 Variety of accommodation: Galata has a great mix of accommodation including boutique apartments, budget hostels and luxurious hotels.

Note: This area is on a hill and a lot of the streets are very steep. It’s also one of the most popular places to visit in Istanbul and so is always crowded. This can make walking around a tad exhausting, particularly in the summer heat, and would be a challenge for anyone with mobility issues. When it rains, the cobbled streets can also become very slippery!

Pros

👍 Great nightlife scene and very lively area.

👍 Close proximity to public transport: M2 Metro, Tünel Funicular, T1 Tram and ferries in Karaköy

👍 Good location for first time visitors

👍 Beautiful charming neighbourhood, cobbled streets and cafes

👍 Close to Galata Tower

Cons

👎 Very hilly, steep streets - not suitable for people with mobility issues.

👎 Aside from Galata Tower, there are no tourist attractions within walking distance.

👎 More touristy and crowded, especially during peak season.

TAKSIM & ISTIKLAL STREET: The Best Area to Stay in Istanbul for Shopping & First Time Visitors

When you’re researching the best places to stay Istanbul, Taksim Square is probably one of the first options that will come up on your list.

Taksim Square and Istiklal Street are the closest thing to an Istanbul city centre (if you can even say there is a  ‘centre’ to this huge city!).

Aside from the historical area of Sultanahmet, this is the Istanbul area that most travellers will have heard of. Famous for its shopping street, vibrant nightlife, street food (book an amazing Guided Istanbul Food Walking Tour) and with an unbeatable location, Taksim also has some of the best luxury hotels as well as more budget-friendly options.

This is definitely one of the best areas in Istanbul to stay in if you want to be near everything!

Taksim Square Mosque covered in snow, best areas to stay in Istanbul

WHY YOU SHOULD STAY IN TAKSIM & ISTIKLAL

🏠 Wide range of accommodation: Given that the area is a commercial and tourist hub, it’s not surprising to find the best hotels in Istanbul Turkey here. You’ll find plenty of luxury, resort-like options, however, there are many under-the-radar places for budget and mid-range travellers too.

📍 Location, location, location: For most visitors looking to book a hotel in Istanbul, Taksim Square is an extremely attractive option as it is well connected by metro (M2 line), funicular to Kabataş for the T1 tram, connecting you to Istanbul’s best attractions in Sultanahmet in 15 minutes.

There is also a cable car to the affluent area of Maçka near Beşiktaş. Airport buses from both Sabiha Gökçen and Istanbul Airports also stop here.

🥇 Perfect for first time visitors: With all public transport options at your doorstep, this location is amazing for first time visitors as you can go anywhere from here!

🛍 Shopping paradise: This 24-hour district is the best place for shopping in Istanbul. Istiklal Caddesi is a stylish 1.4km pedestrianised shopping street that features a mix of high street and local brands, plus boutique stores, antique shops, restaurants, patisseries, ice cream parlours, bookstores, art galleries…I think you get the picture!

🍸 Lively nightlife scene: Venture into any of the side streets that extend out from Istiklal and you’ll find hundreds of local eateries serving cheap and delicious grub, live music venues, pubs and historic coffee houses. Try Mandabatmaz, a cafe famous for serving the best Turkish coffee in Istanbul, with foam so thick (foam on Turkish coffee is very important!) that a water buffalo wouldn’t sink in it.

🥘 World food: Taksim and Istiklal are also one of the neighbourhoods of Istanbul where you can find some amazing world food restaurants - perfect for those days when you are craving something other than Turkish food. Reyhun (Iranian), Habesha (Ethiopian), Falafel Köy (Syrian) and Ali Baba Büfe (Pakistani) are all fantastic.

Pros

👍 Flat area, easily walkable

👍 Central location - well connected by public transport

👍 Excellent for first-time visitors

👍 Great nightlife

👍 Lots of options to eat out including world food

👍 Good for shopping

👍 Luxury hotels

Cons

👎 Can be noisy at night - try to choose accommodation away from bars and clubs

👎 Not many major tourist attractions within walking distance (only Galata Tower)

👎 Very touristy

👎 Can be a bit hectic during the evenings and some areas are a little seedy at night.

KARAKÖY: Where to Stay in Istanbul for Cool Cafes, Nightlife and Hipster Vibes

With its rich historical background and hipster cafe scene, Karaköy is one the most interesting places in Istanbul to stay.

A port since Byzantine times, this neighbourhood at the mouth of the Golden Horn became a multicultural melting pot after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople and was once home to Catalan and Venetian merchants, Greeks, Armenians and Sephardic Jews.

Karaköy gradually fell into decline until 2012 when the area was redeveloped into a nightlife mecca.

An outdoor cafe in Karakoy, Istanbul where to stay guide

WHY YOU SHOULD STAY IN KARAKÖY

🏛 Historic and hipster vibes: Former merchant’s workshops and warehouses were renovated into fashionable boutiques, stylish restaurants and LOTS of funky cafes. Today, Karaköy is one of the most popular neighborhoods of Istanbul for young hipster locals and travellers.

🥇 Great for first time visitors: In terms of where to stay Istanbul has a number of cool and historical neighbourhoods but Karaköy’s charming streets, amazing sea views and central location definitely makes it one of the best areas to stay in Istanbul for tourists visiting the city for the first time.

🚶 Easy access to major attractions: Major tourists attractions in Sultanahmet are 30-minutes walk or 10-minutes by the T1 tram and the neighbourhoods of Galata, Istiklal and Taksim are also within walking distance. The two ferry ports in the area also make it a breeze to get to the Asian side of the city or to the Princess Islands.

🍲 Foodie heaven: Some of Istanbul’s best places to eat and drink are in Karaköy but it’s also a fantastic spot to try some of the city’s cheap and delicious street food.

Karaköy Çorba Evi, a soup kitchen housed in a former church, serves 15 different soups each day and is the perfect stop for a nutritious breakfast or lunch. A few doors down, Balık Durum Mehmet Usta cooks up the best fish wrap in the city - you know the queues don’t lie!

🕌 Off-beat tourist attractions: The underground mosque (Yeraltı Camii), Aya Panteleymon Russian Orthodox Church and Nusretiye Mosque are some of the lesser-known sites that many tourists skip.

When you’re done exploring, treat yourself to a traditional Turkish bath experience at the luxury 16th Century Kiliç Ali Paşa Hamami. Don’t forget to walk across the Galata Bridge at sunset for some of the best views of Istanbul.

Pros

Beşiktaş District

Some of the best neighbourhoods in Istanbul lie in the historic Beşiktaş district.

Located on the European side of the city and directly across the Bosphorus from Üsküdar on the Asian side, this residential and commercial neighbourhood is one of the best places to stay in Istanbul if you want to escape the tourist crowd and explore lesser-known areas of the city.

In terms of the best area to stay Istanbul has a number of high-end hotels, however, some of the most luxurious accommodation is located in the Beşiktaş district.

Here you’ll find old Ottoman palaces and mansions that have been converted into resort-style hotels, such as the Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at the Bosphorus, Çırağan Palace Kempinski and The Stay Bosphorus. The majority also have a range of luxurious facilities such as fitness centres, spas, saunas, swimming pools and hammams.

Since many of the luxury hotels are situated on the shores of the Bosphorus they also boast of having the best view in Istanbul

There are, however, plenty of options for budget travellers, which I will outline below.

Our favourite Beşiktaş neighbourhoods for travellers are Sinanpaşa,Türkali and Ortaköy.

SİNANPAŞA & TÜRKALİ (BEŞİKTAŞ CENTRE): The Best Areas in Istanbul for Budget Travellers & Authentic Vibes

The centre of Beşiktaş is a great option for travellers looking for a budget friendly stay in an upscale neighbourhood.

Ottoman row houses, cool boutique stores, art galleries, jewellery studios and chic cafes and restaurants sit side by side with cheap lokanta restaurants, discount clothing stores and the famous Beşiktaş fish market.

At night, this neighbourhood has a buzzing nightlife scene, ideal for young travellers who want to experience a more local and authentic side to Istanbul.

Ottoman houses on a cobbled street in Araketler Besiktas - Istanbul Best Area to Stay

WHY YOU SHOULD STAY IN SİNANPAŞA & TÜRKALİ

🍽 Foodie heaven: If being close to great cafes, bars and restaurants is your top priority when thinking about where to stay in Istanbul, then this is the place for you. The narrow streets of these areas are packed with tons of lokantas, bakeries, fast food joints, cafes and restaurants, so you’ll never go hungry!

🍳 Breakfast lovers: Beşiktaş is also one of the nice places in Istanbul to have a cheap Turkish breakfast. Along what is locally known as Kahvaltı Sokağı or ‘Breakfast Street’ you’ll find over 30 restaurants each serving affordable and delicious Turkish breakfast.

On weekends, this area gets incredibly busy and people queue for hours outside their favourite restaurants.

💰 Budget friendly: A lot of students live around Sinanpaşa and Türkali as it is close to two major universities, so prices here are much cheaper than in the rest of Beşiktaş. There are plenty of clean and cheap hostels and apartments as well as some mid-range and luxury accommodation options.

🚇 Great public transport: Beşiktaş centre is extremely well connected to the rest of Istanbul. A few minutes walk is the upscale neighbourhood of Akaretler - from here regular buses connect to the T1 tram and metro to Taksim, Galata and Sultanahmet, with journeys taking between 15-30 minutes respectively (during rush hour traffic, this can take longer!).

Buses in the opposite direction go to Ortaköy Mosque within 20 minutes. The ferry port in Beşiktaş also connects to Kadiköy and Üsküdar on the Asian side.

🍸 Excellent nightlife: Sinanpaşa and Türkali have many bars playing live music, and pubs and meyhanes (taverns) with happy hour deals, which makes the centre of Beşiktaş one of the best areas of Istanbul for nightlife, especially if you are on a budget.

🥑 Best for vegans and vegetarians: This is also the best area to live in Istanbul for vegans and vegetarians. There is a vegan supermarket and several vegan/vegetarian restaurants in the area. Vegan Masa, a restaurant serving vegan versions of pide and lahmachun is a must-visit for anyone on a meat-free diet who wants to try traditional Turkish street food!

Local attractions: Check out the Turkish Naval Museum which houses more than 20,000 maritime artefacts. Then explore the opulent Dolmabahçe Palace - the largest palace in Turkey.

Dolmabahçe is a blend of Neoclassical, Baroque, Rococo and Ottoman design and is decorated with gold and crystal. 14 tons of gold was apparently used on the ceiling alone!

Pros

👍 Great public transport to major tourist sites in Istanbul

👍 Not a very touristy area

👍 Fantastic restaurants and cafes

👍Great nightlife scene

👍 More budget hotel options compared to other areas in Beşiktaş

Cons

👎 Major tourist attractions cannot be reached on foot

ORTAKÖY: The Best Place in Istanbul for Couples, Luxury & Romance

With regards to beautiful neighborhoods Istanbul definitely has plenty to choose from however, the area of Ortaköy has recently become something of a social media sensation.

Now one of the most Instagrammable places in Istanbul, tourists and locals flock down to the Neo-Baroque style Ortaköy Camii (Ortaköy Mosque) on the waterfront.

Famous for its super luxury accommodation in Istanbul Turkey,  Ortaköy is the best location to stay in Istanbul for a honeymoon or romantic escape and is at the top of my list of where to stay in Istanbul for couples.

At first, Ortaköy might not strike you as being a traditional Istanbul tourist place but this area has a rich history and many lesser-known attractions that are worth exploring!

A popular tourist area Istanbul in Ortakoy where there is a baroque style mosque on the water's edge

WHY YOU SHOULD STAY IN ORTAKÖY

💖 Luxury and romantic hotels: Widely considered to be one of the most romantic places in Istanbul, Ortaköy is full of 5-star hotels with incredible facilities that cater to your every need. Most of these hotels have extremely romantic settings and are located either right by the water or have stunning views over the Bosphorus.

🌮 Street food: Ortaköy is the best place to try one of Istanbul’s famous street food dishes: kumpir AKA the ultimate loaded baked potato. The insides of these giant spuds are mixed with a generous amount of butter and cheese and then as many toppings as you can handle. One area of Ortaköy is just filled with kumpir sellers!

💎 Architecture and hidden gems: In addition to visiting the dazzling Ortaköy Mosque, architecture aficionados will love Hatice Sultan Palace, a waterfront Ottoman style building that is now a water sports club.

Similarly, Tarihi Husrev Kethuda Hamam, a 300 year old Turkish bath that has been converted into a cultural and arts space is fascinating to walk around.

History: Historically Ortaköy has always been a cosmopolitan neighbourhood with Jewish, Greek, Turkish and Armenian residents: the active Etz-Ahayim Synagogue, Aya Fokas Greek Orthodox Church and Bulgurcu Street are evidence of this multicultural history.

🌲 Green spaces: Nature lovers should take a stroll around nearby Yildiz Park, one of the largest public parks in Istanbul. The park is particularly beautiful in April during the Istanbul Tulip Festival. Fora Park and Halide Hanim Forest Grove are also just 20-30 minutes walk away

🚍 Well connected by bus: Several bus routes go through Ortaköy: you can get to all the major tourist hubs of Galata, Taksim and Sultanahmet within 25 to 40 minutes.

BONUS - ARNUVUTKÖY & BEBEK: Places to Explore From Beşiktaş

Beşiktaş is also a great base from which to explore some of the charming and elegant neighbourhoods along Istanbul’s coast such as Arnavutköy and Bebek.

Colourful wooden mansions in Arnavutkoy, a tourist spot in Turkey Istanbul

Arnavutköy (meaning ‘Albanian village’ in Turkish) is not on the typical tourist trail but is actually one of the most interesting and historical places in Istanbul.

With its colourful wooden Ottoman mansions facing the sea, cute seafood restaurants and cafe-lined picturesque narrow streets, this is definitely one of the must visit places in Istanbul.

There are also plenty of synagogues, churches and mosques! If you are looking to explore beautiful places in Istanbul then Arnavutköy should be an area that tops your list.

Arnavutköy is not the best place in Istanbul to stay for first time visitors to the city as its far away from pretty much everywhere.

The upmarket area of Bebek is another of the top places to visit in Istanbul.

Yachts on a marina in Bebek, Istanbul wealthy neighborhood

Home to some of Istanbul’s wealthiest residents (it even has its own marina where people dock their yachts) Bebek is extremely popular in the summer when Istanbulites from all over the city flock down to enjoy breakfast by the sea, drink in the trendy bars and escape the stifling city heat.

There are a few attractions located in Bebek, including the magnificent Rumeli Hisari Fortress. Bebek Park, located on the shore of the Bosphorus is flanked on either side by the Bebek Mosque and the Egyptian Consulate building (Valide Pasha Mansion), which are also worth visiting.

The gorgeous coastal road into Bebek is narrow and during weekends and evenings becomes absolutely clogged with traffic. However, the completion of public transport systems in this area in 2022 means that you can now avoid this classic Istanbul traffic jam!

If you decide to visit Bebek, we’d recommend taking the metro - you can take the M2 line to Levent and change to the M6 line getting off at Boğazci University. From here the F4 funicular line will take you to Aşiyan, in the heart of Bebek. We’d recommend using this route instead of the bus especially when Bebek is busy.

Despite the improved public transport connections, I wouldn’t recommend Bebek as a place for first time visitors to Istanbul to stay as it’s so far away from the main attractions (for example, getting to Taksim takes around 45 minutes on the metro and Sultanahmet will be over an hour). Accommodation is also pretty expensive and there aren’t that many options for budget travellers.

It’s definitely worth making time on your trip to explore this neighbourhood though!

Fatih District

Woman walking past some colourful houses in Fener, a tourist spot in Turkey Istanbul

Fatih District is the most popular place to stay in Istanbul for tourists because there are so many attractions here - basically everywhere you look, there’s something to visit, be it a museum, a mosque or a bazaar.

Many of the sites can be visited easily on foot or via a short journey on public transport. Most neighbourhoods in this area are well connected to the rest of Istanbul by tram, metro and bus.

Fatih district covers a huge area but the most popular neighbourhoods for tourists are: Fener & Balat, Sultanahmet, Sirkeci, Eminönü, Beyazit, Laleli & Aksaray

FENER & BALAT: The Best Areas of Istanbul for Authenticity, Local Culture & Photography

The lovely neighbourhoods of Fener and Balat are some of the most unique places to stay in Istanbul and a great choice for travellers looking for a more authentic and local experience

This picturesque historical quarter filled with cafes is a photographer's dream and has so many lesser-known sites of interest that it’s also a wonderful place for anyone eager to take an off-beat tour of Istanbul.

Colourful mansions in Balat, where to stay in Turkey Istanbul

WHY YOU SHOULD STAY IN FENER & BALAT

🏛 Historic area: Formerly the old Jewish quarter and home to Greek and Armenian Orthodox Christians, this quaint area is teeming with colourful Ottoman houses, narrow winding cobbled streets and ancient churches. On the main streets, you’ll find quirky cafes, antique shops and tiny bakeries doing a roaring trade in sweet pastries and biscuits.

📸 Authentic and photogenic: Fener and Balat are now some of the most famous places in Istanbul, due to the eye-catching colourful houses and photogenic nature of the neighbourhood. Washing lines are strung up between buildings and children raucously play football in the street - this is the best place in Istanbul to see local people just carrying on with their daily lives.

🏠 Lovely apartment-style accommodation: As Balat is primarily a residential area, accommodation is mainly in the form of apartments or B&Bs - there are no high-end hotels here. Most apartments and rooms will be located inside historical buildings so bear in mind that they are unlikely to have a lift.

Lots of restaurants and cafes: This area also has some superb restaurants - I’ve had some fantastic Turkish breakfasts here and there are many cute cafes serving unique Turkish coffees such Menengic and Dibek. Don’t miss the 140-year-old sweet shop, Merkez Sekercisi which sells homemade ice cream, boiled sweets and Turkish delight.

🚍 Well connected by bus: Buses from Fener/Balat take you directly to Taksim and Galata in 20 minutes. You can reach Sultanahmet via bus and the T1 tram within 30 minutes.

🚊 Transport by tram: The T5 tram line also takes you to nearby areas such as Eyüp Sultan (for the cable car to the scenic viewpoint of Pierre Loti Hill) and the Alibeyköy Otogar, where there are intercity buses to other areas of Turkey. Construction is underway for this line to connect to Eminonu.

Finally, there are ferries to Karaköy and Üsküdar on the Asian side.

💎 Discover hidden gems: Make sure to check out the magnificent St Stephen of the Bulgurs Church made entirely out of iron; the breathtaking mosaics and murals in the Kariye Mosque (Chora Church); the imposing red-brick Phanar Greek Orthodox College for Boys and the Byzantine era Church of Pammakaristos/Fethiye Museum.

On Wednesdays explore the humongous Çarşamba Pazarı (Wednesday Market) near Fatih Mosque.

Pros

👍 Off the beaten track, authentic residential area

👍 Excellent public transport to other areas of Istanbul.

👍 Fantastic food scene - plenty of cafes, bakeries and breakfast restaurants

👍 Not as crowded as other areas of Istanbul

👍 Really interesting places to visit in the area

Cons

👎 The area's popularity with Instagrammers can make it a bit crowded in summer

👎 Can be noisy at night as locals tend to spend time outside their houses until very late.

👎 Accommodation options are limited to apartments or private rooms

👎 No luxury accommodation

👎 A conservative area so there are fewer bars and pubs.

SULTANAHMET: The Best Istanbul Area for First Time Visitors on a Short Trip (1-2 days)

Most people will know that the majority of the historic places in Istanbul are located in the old neighbourhood of Sultanahmet.

This is the cultural and historic centre of Istanbul and where you’ll find the city’s most iconic attractions: the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia Mosque (book a Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia Guided Tour with Tickets); the 15th Century Topkapı Palace and the Basilica Cistern.

No surprise then that in a list of the best places to visit in Istanbul, Sultanahmet usually comes out on top!

Hagia Sofya Mosque in Sultanahmet covered in snow - best area to stay in Istanbul for tourist

WHY YOU SHOULD STAY IN SULTANAHMET

📍 Unbeatable location: Sultanahmet is a top choice location-wise as the main attractions are on your doorstep. All of the incredible sites can be reached on foot within 10-15 minutes and there’s a myriad cafes, restaurants and souvenir shops (Plus an over abundance of Turkish rug stores!)

🕑 Perfect for short trips: If you’re short on time and seeing all the historical sites is your top priority, then this is the best neighborhood to stay in Istanbul. Sultanahmet is one of the best places in Istanbul to stay for first timers and visitors who only have 1-2 days in the city.

👵 Great for the elderly: Many areas of Istanbul are extremely hilly, making walking around tiring and difficult. Staying in Sultanahmet makes things easier as the area is flat and you are so close to everything.

👪 Excellent for families: Sultanahmet is one of my top choices of where to stay in Istanbul with family - you don’t have to worry about getting your kids onto public transport to travel to the major tourist spots or dealing with Istanbul’s crazy traffic jams.

🏛 Charming historical area: Sultanahmet is like an open-air museum. There are gorgeous ancient buildings everywhere you look, winding cobbled stone streets and picturesque cafes. Wandering around here is simply a pleasure.

🚶 Walkable: Most of Sultanahmet is pedestrianised and cars are not allowed between 10am-9pm, so it’s easy to walk around even when it’s crowded during the summer. Plenty of buses and trams operate from this area, so getting to other parts of Istanbul is super easy.

🏠 Variety of accommodation: The majority of hotels here are in the mid-range to high-end bracket and whilst accommodation prices in tourist areas in Istanbul tend to be higher you will still find some cheap hotels in Istanbul’s Sultanahmet area for budget travellers.

Tip: If you want to experience Istanbul’s famous nightlife scene, don’t stay in Sultanahmet. It’s extremely quiet after 9pm when most businesses close up for the night and you’ll struggle to find any evening entertainment. However if you prefer a place that is quiet after sunset, then Sultanahmet is the place for you!

Pros

👍 Walking distance to all the major tourist sites - this area is the best place to stay in Istanbul for tourists short on time

👍 Great public transport connections to the rest of Istanbul

👍 Very flat area and easy to walk compared to other Istanbul neighbourhoods

👍 No traffic for most of the day

👍 Best for a short trip

Cons

👎 One of the most touristic places in Istanbul

👎 Higher prices in shops and restaurants

👎 Restaurants cater to tourists so there is a lack of authentic and budget friendly Turkish cuisine

👎 Barely any nightlife as everything shuts after 9pm

👎 Can feel a bit crowded with tour groups and buses

SİRKECİ: The Best Location to Stay in Istanbul for Families

Sirkeci is the best area in Istanbul to stay if you want to be close to Sultanahmet’s attractions but away from the tourist crowds. It is also a much more affordable area to stay in.

Sitting between Eminonu and Sultanahmet, Sirkeci, on the eastern side of the Fatih district, is a fantastic area to stay in Istanbul, also because it is a transport hub. From Sirkeci you can literally go anywhere

This lovely area right next to the historical centre also has a huge park that is perfect for families with children looking to relax and escape the summer heat.

Colourful restaurants and cafes in the Sirkeci area, best hotel location in istanbul

WHY YOU SHOULD STAY IN SİRKECİ

🚶 Close to attractions: Most hotels in Sirkeci are within 10-15 minutes walk of the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, Hagia Sophia and the Grand Bazaar. If you don’t want to walk or the weather isn’t great, you can just hop on a tram and get to Sultanahmet that way. You’ll find that the majority of hotels in this area are close to the tram stops of Sirkeci and Gulhane.

🚇 Great public transport: The tram can also take you to Kabataş (for the lovely Dolmabahçe Palace); Taksim and the nearby hipster neighbourhood of Çihangir; and to Karaköy where you can take the F2 Funicular line to Galata and the start of Istiklal Street. Location-wise it’s definitely one of the best neighborhoods to stay in Istanbul.

Easy access to the Asian side: There are also ferries heading everywhere from Sirkeci - you can go to Kadiköyand Üsküdar on the Asian side in less than 30 minutes and also take a ferry to the Princess Islands. Getting to Sabiha Gökçen airport is also a breeze - just take the ferry to Kadiköy and jump on an airport bus from the pier.

💰 Budget friendly: Sirkeci doesn’t have the crowds of Sultanahmet and is far less touristy. Prices of hotels and in restaurants, cafes and shops are lower too. You’ll find a lot of budget and mid-range hotels but fewer luxury accommodation options.

Important local attractions: The fragrant Egyptian Spice Bazaar, a delightful market with every spice imaginable from oregano to saffron, is a few minutes walk away. Pick up some pul biber (dried red pepper flakes) and nar ekşisi (pomegranate molasses) as gifts to take home.

The beautiful old Sirkeci Station, formerly the terminus of the Orient Express and now a museum and the 113-year-old Istanbul Grand Post Office (Büyük Postane) are also worth visiting.

🌲 Close to a park: When you tire of wandering around the historical sites head over to Gulhane Park, a beautiful place in Istanbul. This lovely green area is great for families with kids - there is a children’s playground and tea gardens overlooking the Bosphorus. It’s a welcome respite from a long day of sightseeing.

👪 Fantastic for families: Sirkeci’s location, affordability, huge park and great transport links make it the best place to stay in Istanbul for families.

Pros

👍 Amazing public transport links

👍 Walking distance to tourist attractions - the best place to stay in Istanbul with family

👍 Lower prices in shops, restaurants and cafes

👍 Plenty of budget and mid-range hotels

👍 Close to Gulhane Park

Cons

👎 Very little nightlife

👎 Fewer luxury hotels in the area

Budget friendly and conveniently located, Eminönü is packed with thousands of shops, offices, souvenir stalls, workshops, restaurants, coffee shops, ancient tombs and mosques. Everywhere you look there’s something going on!

Eminonu Square filled with people and food stalls with a bridge behind.

WHY YOU SHOULD STAY IN EMİNÖNÜ

📍 Great Location: Eminönü is very close to the main tourist places in Istanbul - the attractions of Sultanahmet are just 15-20 minutes on foot, making it a good choice of where to stay in Istanbul with kids.

🚍 Well connected by public transport: Like Sirkeci, Eminönü is a major public transport hub and has tram, bus and train connections - you can reach the neighbourhoods of Karaköy and Galata by ferry and tram very easily from here and Fener/Balat is only 15 minutes by bus.

Easy access to the Asian side and the Princess Islands: From Eminönü Pier you can reach the Asian side of Istanbul by ferry in less than 30 minutes. BUDO ferries heading to the nearby city of Bursa (a great place to visit on a day trip) also leave from Eminönü.

Eminönü Square is the main attraction in the neighbourhood - filled with tourists and locals, it’s a lively place right beside the ferry pier and tram stop. There are plenty of restaurants and tiny stalls selling simits, chestnuts, kebabs and fish wraps in this area.

Local attractions: Other worthwhile places to visit include the Yeni Cami (New Mosque) which sits right near the water; the Galata Bridge; the Egyptian Spice Bazaar; the impressive architectural feat of the Valens Aqueduct and the breathtaking Suleymaniye Mosque that overlooks the neighbourhood.

Pros

👍 Great public transport by bus, tram and ferry

👍 Walking distance to Sultanahmet’s attractions - it's the best place to stay in Istanbul for 2 days or less.

👍 Great for budget accommodation

👍 Lots of places to shop and eat

Cons

👎 Very crowded and chaotic during the day

👎 A more conservative area so fewer bars and pubs

BEYAZİT: The Best Neighborhood in Istanbul for The Grand Bazaar, Affordable Accommodation & Intercity Travel

The tiny neighbourhood of Beyazit is another area in the Fatih District that is popular among tourists. Walking distance to the main attractions and a stone’s throw from the Grand Bazaar, the largest covered market in the world.

This area has plenty of good quality affordable accommodation, plus a number of luxury hotels.

The arched entrance to Istanbul University in Beyazit, best part of Istanbul to stay

WHY YOU SHOULD STAY IN BEYAZİT

🚶 Walking distance to attractions: Beyazit is 10-15 minutes walk to all of the tourist attractions in Sultanahmet and is the location of the Grand Bazaar, a great place to pick up some souvenirs.

🕶 Cool local attractions: A few minutes walk and you’ll be in Beyazit Square with its traditional old tea shops and cafes. This is also where you’ll find the grand entrance to the Istanbul University and the 16th-century Beyazit Mosque. Other attractions around Beyazit include Beyazit Tower, an Ottoman era 85-metre tall fire watchtower in the courtyard of Istanbul University.

🚇 Well connected by tram and metro: Beyazit is a great location primarily because it is so well connected to everywhere else in Istanbul. From Beyazit’s tram stop it takes 20 minutes to get to Galata and Taksim (via tram and M2 metro line); 15 minutes to Karaköy; and 25 mins to Dolmabahçe Palace in Beşiktaş. You can even reach the lovely cafes in Çihangir in 25 minutes!

💰 Budget friendly area: You’ll find plenty of decent cheap accommodation here, ideal for travellers on a budget. The cafes and restaurants in Beyazit are geared towards university students and so prices in this area are lower too!

Great for travelling to other places in Turkey: If you are planning to travel outside of Istanbul, Beyazit is an ideal location to stay. Esenler Otogarı, a massive intercity bus station, is accessible by metro and shuttle buses to Istanbul and Sabiha Gökcen Airports run regularly from Beyazit Square.

Tip: Due to its proximity to the Grand Bazaar and the fact that many city buses and dolmuş minibuses stop here, Beyazit can feel very busy and a little overcrowded. If that bothers you, then staying in Sirkeci is a better option. Beyazit is also pretty quiet at night after the shops and bazaar close.

Pros

👍 Well connected to the rest of Istanbul by public transport

👍 Walking distance to major attractions in Sultanahmet and close to the Grand Bazaar

👍 Plenty of affordable accommodation

👍 Less touristy than Sultanahmet

👍 Excellent for inter-city travel

Cons

👎 Very crowded, noisy and busy during the day due to its location

👎 No nightlife

LALELİ & AKSARAY: The Best Places to Stay in Istanbul for World Food & Off-Beat Travellers on a Budget

Laleli and Aksaray are unlikely to be on many travellers radars but if you are looking for super affordable accommodation then these are the best neighbourhoods to stay in Istanbul.

A shopping district packed with wholesale markets and close to Istanbul University, this area is well connected by public transport and walking distance to a few attractions, making it great for off-beat travellers on a budget.

Laleli and Aksaray are home to a very diverse community - something that is reflected in the restaurants and cafes. Some of the best places to eat in Istanbul are here!

This is one of the best locations to stay in Istanbul if you want to be near the sights but also experience a different side of the city.

Shopping street and hotels in Aksaray, best place to stay in Istanbul Turkey

WHY YOU SHOULD STAY IN LALELİ & AKSARAY

🚊 Well connected by public transport: Laleli and Aksaray are on the T1 tram line which takes you to Sultanhamet and Karaköy in 10-15 minutes. From the Laleli tram stop, you can walk to Vezneciler Metro station on the M2 line - this takes you to Taksim, Istikal Street and Galata. Additionally, Aksaray has an M1 line metro station.

🚶 Walking distance to some attractions: You can also reach the Grand Bazaar and Beyazit Mosque on foot within 15 minutes. The Baroque Laleli Mosque and the equally stunning Pertevniyal Valide Sultan Mosque are off-beat sites that are also worth a visit.

🍛 Multicultural food scene: Head to Aksaray for Syrian, Yemeni, Uighur, Azerbaijani and Pakistani food. Drop-in for a cup of tea and a sugar hit at Zaitoune, a sweet shop specialising in Syrian and Arabic sweets. Their tamryah (a sweet made with pistachios, dates and cardamom) is just heavenly.

Tip: The backstreets of Aksaray and Laleli have a reputation for being unsafe in the evening - if you do decide to stay here, stick to areas and hotels close to the tramline.

Pros

Şişli District

Şişli is a huge district in Istanbul that has a number of hip and upmarket neighbourhoods, including Kurtuluş/Osmanbey, Nişantaşı and Bomonti/Feriköy

With a reputation for being one of Istanbul’s most elite neighbourhoods, you’ll find modern hotels and apartments, plenty of fashion boutiques, shopping malls and restaurants. Recently Şişli has also become known as an entertainment, small business and financial centre.

This area is extremely cosmopolitan and historically has had Muslim, Jewish, Armenian and Greek Orthodox inhabitants. Walk around any of the backstreets and you’ll discover old Jewish synagogues, Christian churches and mosques

In my opinion, Şişli is one of the best places to live in Istanbul (yes I know I live here and so I am biased!). Şişli has some interesting and off-beat attractions of its own, but it also has great public transport via bus and metro: you can be at the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia in Sultanahmet within 30 minutes.

Şişli also boasts some of the best places to eat in Istanbul, especially for vegan and vegetarian travellers

KURTULUŞ & OSMANBEY : The Best Istanbul Areas for Business Travellers and Longer Visits (5+ Days)

The areas of Kurtuluş and Osmanbey are some of the most interesting places in Istanbul, primarily because they have such a unique and diverse history.

A busy and authentic neighbourhood with a happening food scene, superb transport links and a variety of accommodation options, this is a great area for long-term visitors who are keen to experience a more local side to life in the city.

WHY YOU SHOULD STAY IN KURTULUŞ & OSMANBEY

🏛 Historical and diverse area: Kurtuluş was once the centre of the Greek Orthodox community and is now one of Istanbul’s largest Armenian neighbourhoods. There are traces of this multicultural melting pot everywhere: you’ll find Greek and Armenian churches, a synagogue and mosques here. It’s also considered to be a more LGBTQ friendly area.

🚇 Well connected by bus and metro: The Osmanbey metro station (M2 line) is just one stop from Taksim. You can travel to historic Sultanahmet by metro and tram within 30 minutes and Galata is just 8-10 minutes on the metro. Karaköy (for ferries to the Asian side) is only 15-20 minutes by metro or bus.

The fashionable shopping district of Nişantaşı is also within walking distance and regular buses run to Beşiktaşand Ortaköy.

🏠 Good range of accommodation: There is a variety of accommodation options here including budget and boutique hotels to a few mid-range and high-end options featuring spas, indoor and outdoor pools and fitness centres. Many of the hotels cater to people visiting Istanbul on business.

🕰 Great for long term stays: Kurtuluş and Osmanbey are some of the best residential areas in Istanbul and definitely the best neighbourhoods in Istanbul to stay if you are thinking about visiting the city for a long period. As this area doesn’t cater to tourists, prices in shops and restaurants are much lower. There are also plenty of supermarkets in the area.

🍹 Trendy food scene: There is a vibrant hipster cafe culture plus many cool bars serving beer and fabulous cocktails. A number of meyhane restaurants (Turkish taverns) serve mezzes with rakı, beer and wine. Start your day at Sureya Kahvaltı, a restaurant with a lovely garden area that serves an amazing Turkish breakfast and is very popular on weekends.

🥑 Vegan and vegetarian friendly: Hipster culture here means more vegan/vegetarian restaurants offering everything from vegan burgers, pizzas and falafel wraps to vegan mantı (Turkish ravioli)!

Off-beat attractions: The Atatürk Museum, on Halaskargazi Caddesi, is dedicated to the founder of modern Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. This museum is housed in Atatürk’s former home from 1908-1919 and contains many of his personal belongings including military uniforms, photographs and medals.

🎤 Events: There’s always something cool going on in this area too - including concerts, handicraft markets and festivals!

👍 Residential authentic local area

👍 Good range of accommodation for all budgets

👍 Not very touristy so prices in restaurants and shops are lower

👍 Vegan and vegetarian friendly restaurants

NİŞANTAŞI: The Best Area for Luxury Shopping in Istanbul, Premium Apartments & Nightlife

The elegant neighbourhood of Nişantaşı, with its stylish leafy streets, uber-cool cafes and glittering luxury shops is world’s away from the major tourist areas of Taksim and Sultanahmet. Featuring two charming parks, this fashionable up-market district also has some of the best high-end hotels in Istanbul.

Cobbled street and luxury shops in Nisantasi district, places to visit in Istanbul with family

WHY YOU SHOULD STAY IN NİŞANTAŞI

🛍 Luxury shopping: For travellers excited about the prospect of shopping in Istanbul, then a trip to Nişantaşı is a must. This neighbourhood, with its mix of well known high-end brands (like Prada, Gucci and Armani) and boutique stores by popular Turkish designers is definitely one of the best places to shop in Istanbul away from the crowds.

🎭 Art, cafes, food: Nişantaşı isn’t just all about shopping. This area has fantastic art galleries, delightful cafes, cinemas, bars and restaurants. Despite being an up-market area, the fact that Nişantaşı isn’t overrun by tour groups means that the prices in restaurants, bars and cafes are catered for locals and not tourists.

🍸 Vibrant nightlife: After sunset, you can head towards the trendy bars and clubs in Nişantaşi that serve up cocktails and tunes until the early hours. Istanbul nightlife areas go way beyond Beyoğlu so if you’re wondering where to go in Istanbul at night and want to stay away from Taksim, head to Nişantaşi.

🏠 Lovely hotels: Nişantaşı is the area to stay in Istanbul if you like the fancy side of things: accommodation here is mostly stylish luxury and boutique hotels. There are also plenty of mid-range options targeting business travellers.

🍳 Perfect for breakfast lovers: One of the best places for breakfast in Istanbul, Ceşme Bazlama Kahvaltı now has three branches in Nişantası and is incredibly popular. The restaurant has a set breakfast menu and all the items from the gözleme (Turkish pancakes) to the jams and spreads are homemade. Plus the breakfast items keep on coming until you beg them to stop!

🚡 Public transport links: Nişantaşı doesn’t have a metro station but a cable car (teleferik) from Maçka Park connects the area to Taksim, Istiklal Street (5 minutes) and the M2 metro line. Buses from nearby Harbiye connecting to the T1 tram line can get you to Karaköy within 30 minutes and to the tourist sites in Sultanahmet in 40 minutes.

🌲 Parks: Maçka Demokrasi Park is a lovely green space to escape the summer heat - it’s a popular place to have a picnic on summer evenings. The adjoining Nişantası Kedili Park is fantastic for cat lovers - over a 100 very affectionate stray cats live here!

💎 Discover hidden gems: Don’t miss the military museum which covers 1000 years of Turkish military history; the Cemal Resit Rey and Lutfi Kirdar concert halls that host a variety of music and dance performances throughout the year; the recently restored neo-Baroque Tesvikiye Mosque and the Ihlamur Pavilions, the former summer pavilions of the Ottoman sultans.

👍 Restaurants, cafes and bars are priced for locals

Cons

BOMONTİ & FERİKÖY : The Best Istanbul Neighbourhoods for Cool Serviced Apartments & Long Trips (5+ Days)

Relatively unknown amongst tourists, the areas of Bomonti and the nearby smaller neighbourhood of Feriköy are residential areas of Şişli district that are popular with travellers looking for places to stay with a trendy nightlife and restaurant scene. Perfect for long-term visitors, this area is buzzing with small restaurants, cafes, bookshops and clothing stores.

Due to Bomonti being quite an upmarket residential area, there are fewer budget accommodation options here. Instead you’ll find mostly serviced apartments and boutique, mid-range and luxury hotels.

Cool cafes in Bomonti, best area to stay in Istanbul

WHY YOU SHOULD STAY IN BOMONTİ & FERİKÖY

🏛 Cool history and architecture: Visit the 19th Century Bomonti brewery, transformed into Bomontiada, a cultural hub featuring music and entertainment venues, dining areas and art galleries.

🎵 Live music and art: At Bomontiada you’ll find Babylon, Istanbul’s number one live music venue, hosting national and international artists and the Ara Güler museum showcasing the work of the renowned Turkish-Armenian photographer Ara Güler.

The Leica Store and Gallery, which exhibits work by local and internationally famous photographers and offers photography classes and workshops.

🚇 Well connected by metro: Most hotels in this area are within 10-15 minutes walking distance to the Osmanbey metro station. From here you can take the metro and tram to Sultanahmet (25 minutes) for the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque. Taksim and Galata are 20-30 minutes away. A number of bus routes also cover this area.

🍽 Buzzing restaurant scene: There are plenty of places to eat in Bomonti and Feriköy, from fine dining restaurants like Kilimanjaro serving Turkish dishes to The Populist, a microbrewery and craft beer pub offering all sorts of tasty bar-style food.

A branch of Baruthane Pilavcısı, famous for its nohut pilav (chickpeas and rice) is located here and does a roaring lunchtime trade.

🍎 Organic food markets: On Saturdays explore the Feriköy Organik Pazar (Feriköy Organic Market). This weekly market sells a wide range of organic fruits, vegetables, nuts, cheese, jams, olive oil and bread. This market is worth a visit for the food stalls near the entrance alone - try the fresh gözleme (Turkish pancakes), borek, cakes and pastries here.

🗝 Flea markets: The same site is used on Sundays for the Feriköy Antika Pazari (Feriköy Antique Market), so if browsing through old vinyl records, knick knacks, homeware and retro film posters is more your kind of thing, go and check it out!

Istanbul's Asian Side - Districts and Neighbourhoods

Moda neighbourhood in Kadikoy - best district to stay in Istanbul

Considering that the Eastern half of this city is technically on another continent, I can understand why most first time visitors to Istanbul don’t even think about staying on the Asian side.

All of the top tourist attractions are on the European side and well…the Asian side of Istanbul just sounds so far away, especially if you aren’t familiar with the city. Right?

Wrong. Istanbul’s Asian side can be amazing for first time visitors. With cafe lined streets, antique shops, excellent eateries, incredible murals and street art, the relaxed pace on the Asian side is perfect for travellers who want to explore Istanbul like a local

These parts of Istanbul are far less crowded and hectic: there are fewer tourists and as a result lower prices for accommodation and at cafes and restaurants.

The most popular areas for travellers to stay on the Asian side are: Kadıkoy Centre, Moda and Üsküdar

Kadıköy District

Sunset over Kadikoy Pier with boats in the background - istanbul interesting places

The beautiful seaside promenade in the area of Kadıköy, which has views across the water to the European side, is the perfect place to enjoy a spectacular sunset. Large, green city parks provide a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Fresh fruit, vegetable and fish markets are everywhere and there is a huge shopping district with a mixture of shopping malls and vintage stores. With some of the best nightlife Istanbul has to offer, including late night cafes, bars, restaurants and clubs, this district on the Asian side has something for everyone.

And it really isn’t so far away. Frequent ferries (every 15 to 30 minutes) run from Asia to Europe and you can be in Karaköy (for Galata and Taksim) or Eminönü (for Sultanahmet) within 30 minutes.

🏠 Budget accommodation: From cute apartments and B&Bs to hotels, this is the best place in Istanbul for budget travellers.

YELDEĞIRMENI: The Best Area On Istanbul’s Asian Side For Arts, Culture, Cafes & Affordable Accommodation

Named after the four flour windmills built by Sultan Abdulhamid I in 1744, the historically multicultural neighbourhood of Yeldeğirmeni became a haven for artists, entrepreneurs, creatives and hipster Istanbulites in the 2010s.

Today it is a vibrant mix of art and design studios, trendy cafes and bookshops. However, the beauty of Yeldeğirmeni is that much of its Ottoman heritage has been preserved and it has retained its traditional vibe - you’ll still find plenty of old-fashioned bakeries, tiny lokantas, tea houses and breakfast restaurants frequented by locals.

There’s even a working hamam that dates back to the 1800s and is world’s away from the fancy Turkish baths for tourists in the rest of the city!

With great transport links, proximity to other Kadıköy neighbourhoods and reasonably priced accommodation that’s ideal for budget travellers, it’s little wonder that Yeldeğirmeni is considered to be the best place to live in Istanbul amongst locals.

A mural of a woman in a chair in Yeldegirmeni neighbourhood, best area to live in istanbul for tourist

WHY YOU SHOULD STAY IN YELDEĞIRMENI

🏛 Historic area: Like Balat, Yeldeğirmeni was historically a sanctuary for Istanbul’s ethnic minorities. Greek and Armenian Orthodox Christians and Jews lived in the area and visitors can see traces of this rich multicultural history through the synagogue and numerous churches that dot the area and still operate today.

This neighbourhood is also where the first stone apartment blocks in Istanbul were built!

Amazing cafes and restaurants: Along with Moda and Cihangir, Yeldeğirmeni is definitely the best part of Istanbul to stay for cafe lovers and foodies. You'll find everything from stone baked pizzas and home cooked Turkish food to Bento noodles and Turkish breakfasts with regional specialities.

Our favourite haunts include Lethe, Yell Coffee and Atelier, Küff Yeldeğirmeni and the wonderfully cosy Odessa Sahaf for tea, desserts and books.

🏠 Affordable accommodation and area: Chock-full of wallet friendly B&Bs, apartments, hostels and even boutique hotels, it’s the ideal neighbourhood for budget travellers. And as it’s not touristy, prices in cafes and restaurants are lower too!

🥑 Fantastic for vegan and vegetarian travellers: From vegan-friendly lokantas to restaurants serving entire vegan/vegetarian breakfast spreads plus everything in between, those on a plant-based diet will not go hungry. This area is certainly up there as one of the best neighborhoods in Istanbul to live in for meat-free folk!

For delicious, freshly made Turkish food with plenty of vegan and vege options check out Leylak Restoran. We also love the amazing vegan breakfast at Müjgan Yeldeğirmeni.

💎 Off-beat attractions: Explore the stunning Greek Orthodox Church of Ayios Yeorgios, famous for being the last church built in Turkey in 1961 and admire the architecture of the area's original apartment buildings.

Standouts include the Armenian Tevfik Tura Apartment, the Jewish Ankara Apartments and Sünget Apartments, a guesthouse for German engineers and architects involved in the Haydarpasa Railway Station in the early 1900s. Don’t miss the Osmangazi Primary School built for German children whose parents were working on the railway project.

🚇 Great public transport: The Kadıköy ferry port is easy walking distance and frequent ferries will get you to Karaköy and Eminönü in 25-30 minutes. Then hop on the tram for Sultanahmet or the Tünel funicular for Galata or Taksim. Alternatively take the M1 metro from Kadıköy followed by the Marmaray line to Sirkeci (30 minutes). From Sirkeci you can reach Sultanahmet by tram in just 4 minutes.

The Havaist buses (for Istanbul Airport) and Havabus buses (for Sabiha Göçken Airport) arrive and leave from the bus station right near the ferry pier making this one of the best areas to stay in Istanbul for first timers, despite being on the Asian side.

🎨 Amazing artwork, galleries and studios: Yeldeğirmeni is one of the most artsy Istanbul suburbs and was the main location for the Mural Istanbul Festival which began in 2012. Local and international artists decorated the neighbourhood with huge paintings and today almost 40 walls in the area have fantastic murals on them.

Visit Yeldeğirmeni Sanat, an arts centre and concert hall in the restored Notre Dame du Rosaire Church; check out the creative houses and galleries at Nadas Istanbul and NOX Independent Art Space or attend a play at Eylül Sahnesi!

🛍 Shopping: Niarmena Design Shop & Cafe has cool laptop bags, embroidered purses, handmade ceramics and jewellery. Pick up amazing body oils, greeting cards and clothes at Soi Handmade. Fashionistas will love Bee Vintage whilst graphic novel aficionados should check out Kuzgun Çizgi Roman Evi and Flaneur Kitabevi.

Üsküdar District

Sunset over red roofed houses and a mosque in Uskudar, Istanbul stay

It’s likely that many travellers will visit Istanbul and never even hear of Üsküdar but this sprawling area on the Asian side has a lot to offer. Famous for its beautiful coastline and unique mosques, Üsküdar is well connected by ferry and train to Istanbul’s European side.

Üsküdar has mostly mid-range and boutique hotels plus a few 5* luxury options along the coastline.

This is a huge district and honestly, we haven’t had time to explore all the different neighbourhoods in-depth so our suggestions below of where to stay in Üsküdar will be from all over the district.

ÜSKÜDAR: The Best Place in Istanbul to Stay for Off-beat Travellers & Authentic Experiences

Üsküdar has a lot to offer travellers looking for a more local and authentic place to stay in Istanbul.

This friendly area boasts amazing parks (many with jaw-dropping viewpoints), photogenic neighbourhoods, a stunning shoreline, unique architecture and there are plenty of historic places too!

With its own metro system and ferry terminal, getting to the European side is convenient and easy.

WHY YOU SHOULD STAY IN ÜSKÜDAR

🚇 Excellent public transport: The metro station, Marmaray line station and Üsküdar ferry pier are all conveniently close together. Hop on a ferry from Üsküdar and you will be in Karaköy in a mere 15-20 minutes.

The Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia in Sultanahmet are 30-40 minutes by ferry and tram, whilst Beşiktaş and Dolmabahçe Palace are 30 minutes by ferry ın the opposite direction.

👁 Amazing viewpoints: Büyük Çamlıca Tepesi (Big Çamlica Hill) is definitely the best viewpoint on the Asian Side. From 288 metres above sea level you are treated to a magnificent panoramic view of the Bosphorus and the European side of the city. A favourite picnic spot for locals, the hill is particularly beautiful during the Istanbul Tulip Festival.

🕌 Unique mosques: The stunning Şakirin Mosque, the first mosque to be designed by a woman, combines futuristic and traditional design while the geometric design of the Marmara Ilahiyat Cami (Marmara Faculty of Theology Mosque) is jaw-dropping.

The Çamlica Mosque is the largest mosque in Turkey. The complex includes an art gallery, conference hall and library!

📸 Photogenic neighbourhoods: The cute waterfront neighbourhood of Kuzguncuk with its lovely colourful houses and picturesque cafes is perfect for a relaxing stroll.

Local attractions: Kız Kulesi (Maiden’s Tower), is a medieval Byzantine tower just off Üsküdar’s shoreline. The inside of the tower has been converted into a restaurant and cafe, with beautiful views of the Bosphorus. Beylerbeyi Palace, an Ottoman era summer residence is also worth a visit.

🌲 Lovely parks: Fethipaşa Korusu (Fethipaşa Grove), is a huge public park with wonderful sea views and a great spot to stop for a cup of çay.
