Some of my favourite gift ideas for outdoor women are designed to take us outside of our usual comfort zones. Grandma Gatewood’s Walk shows that age is really nothing but a number when it comes to following your dreams.
In 1955, after telling her family that she was going out for a walk, 67 year old Emma Gatewood left her home with just a change of clothes and a hundred dollars.
Four months later she became the first woman to have hiked the entirety of the Appalachian Trail (the longest continuous footpath in the world).
Her journey took her 146 days, through 14 states and she went through 7 pairs of shoes!
This is a story of incredible endurance and determination by a woman who had faced huge hardships in her life. Grandma Gatewood would walk the Appalachian Trail not just once in her life, but two more times, the last at the ripe old age of 76.
